A tenfold improvement in battery life

A tenfold improvement in battery life?

Stanford University researchers have made a discovery that could signal the arrival of laptop batteries that last more than a day on a single charge.

The researchers have found a way to use silicon nanowires to give rechargeable lithium ion batteries–used in laptops, iPods, video cameras, and mobile phones–as much as 10 times more charge. This potentially could give a conventional battery-powered laptop 40 hours of battery life, dell inspiron e1505 battery, rather than 4 hours.

The new batteries were developed by assistant professor Yi Cui and colleagues at Stanford University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

“It’s not a small improvement,” Cui said. “It’s a revolutionary development.”

Citing a research paper they wrote, published in Nature Nanotechnology, Cui said the increased battery capacity was made possible though a new type of anode that utilizes silicon nanowires. Traditional lithium ion batteries(gd761 ,kd476) use graphite as the anode. This limits the amount of lithium–which holds the charge–that can be held in the anode, and it therefore limits battery life.

Silicon anodes have the “the highest theoretical charge capacity” according to Cui’s paper, but they expand when charging and shrink during use: a cycle that causes the silicon to be pulverized, degrading the performance of the battery. For 30 years, this dead end stumped researchers, who poured their battery(inspiron b120 battery, inspiron b130 battery) life-extending energy into improving graphite-based anodes.

Cui and his colleagues looked at this old problem and overcame it by constructing a new type of silicon nanowire anode. In Cui’s anode, the lithium is stored in a forest of tiny silicon nanowires, each with a diameter that is a thousandth of the thickness of a sheet of paper. The nanowires inflate to four times their normal size as they soak up lithium, but unlike previous silicon anodes, they do not fracture.

Cui said there are a few barriers to commercializing the technology.

“We are working on scaling up and evaluating the cost of our technology,” Cui said. “There are no roadblocks for either of these.”

Cui has filed a patent on the technology and is considering formation of a company or an agreement with a battery manufacturer for dell xps m1330 battery. He expects the battery to be commercialized and available within “several years,” pending testing.

4X The Lifespan Of Current Lithium Ion Batteries

New Sony Rechargeable Battery Has 4X The Lifespan Of Current Lithium Ion Batteries

Sony has announced a new type of lithium ion rechargeable laptop battery that combines high-power and long-life performance than traditional laptop battery, such as sony vgp-bps2c ,vgp-bps2a,vgp-bps5a battery , using olivine-type lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material. The Olivine-type lithium iron phosphate used in this new battery is a perfect cathode material due to its robust crystal structure and stable performance, even at high temperatures. These bateries have a high power density of 1800W/kg, and extended life span of approximately 2,000 charge-discharge cycles. What’s most surprising is that the battery will keep an 80% charge retention after those 2,000 charge-discharge cycles, which is very impressive.

This new battery is also able to charge rapidly (99% in 30 minutes). It will first be supplied for use in power tools, then gradually make its way to consumer electronic electronic devices. With lithium ion secondary batteries able to deliver both compact size and high capacity, their usage continues to diversify and grow. This new battery delivers an extended life-span of over four-times existing rechargeable lithium ion batteries used in conventional electronic devices. By adding this high-power, long-life lithium ion rechargeable battery to its lineup than vgp-bps2c, Sony has certainly strengthened its battery business going forward.

Explore the explode reason of laptop battery

Explore the explode reason of laptop battery

Laptop battery is composing of enclosure, interface, cell and control circuit board, battery cell is responsible for supplying and storing the power of the laptop. Control circuit board with complex working principle and design, it controls the laptop battery start and stop charging at proper time, control the discharge current reasonable, and it also take charge of showing the battery capacity and recycle charge times recording. When the battery in a high temperature or large current and other un-normal condition, it the control circuit board can protect the battery.

The four suspicion of laptop battery exploding.

A, Battery cells interior short-circuit

The battery cells has no protection function when meet large current, if single or multiple cells happen short-circuit situation, it will let cells discharge at high current. These current generate large quantity of heats will let the battery enhance the temperature,(hd438,kd186) and then transfer to the other parts of laptop. If the battery enclosure is plastic material, it will deform or even get fired under high temperature, it is dangerous. The regular cells has experience strict test when out from factory, and the battery enclosure always adopt fireproof material and difficult to get fire. So the most possibility is involved with poor quality material.

B, Battery cells connector wire short-circuit

The battery interior structure is too compact which leave opportunity for the cells.Dell inspiron b120 battery and inspiron b130 battery , their wires in the middle are quite compact and close to the cells, if the skin of the cells and wires wore out, or the connect wires break off, then the cells will discharge at very high current and bring high temperature and cause fire final.

C, The control circuit invalidation

Sometimes, the control circuit will be invalidate for its protection part even it performed normal when use it, when under full charge and un-normal, large current situation, the temperature will enhance and cause fire.

D Heat and abrupt incident

The laptop over heat or exterior liquid corrode, lightning strike or voltage un-normal will cause short-circuit.

New laptop battery review

Battery is generally cylindrical in shape with two terminals, one positive electrode and one negative electrode that conduct electricity along with a substance called electrolyte, that works on the electrodes, chemically and help convert into electrical energy. lenovo Laptop Battery,There is a copper wire that connects the two electrodes. Materials that are used in batteries are carbon, alkaline, chlorine, lithium ion, lead, nickel, sodium, silicon, copper, etc.

Batteries are classified into two- Dry cells and wet cells. The wet cell batteries are also termed storage thinkpad t60 battery , sony vgp-bps2c ,vgp-bps2a battery as they can be recharged as many times as possible. Batteries are also divided as rechargeable and non-rechargeable or disposable batteries. The second type is again termed as primary cells, used till the chemical that produce the electrical current supply is fully consumed, at whicah point the battery is not needed anymore. These types of batteries are used very commonly in ThinkPad Z61t,small and portable piece of equipments that drain low current.

The other type is rechargeable or in other words secondary cells that can be “refueled” even after being completely consumed. For recharging, these batteries need some external help from devices as chargers or re-chargers.

In the present world due to the development of science and technology almost everything (papers, plastics, b,thinkpad t60 battery, thinkpad x60s battery, aluminum, etc.) can be recycled without wasting it by just throwing it after use. Thus we see that recycling is a procedure by which waste products are recovered for reusing, which is also known as waste management.

Laptop Battery recycling falls under electronic waste or e-waste. Here any discarded, broken or unwanted electrical or electronic equipments, ThinkPad Z60t,containing toxic materials are recycled for further use. Batteries like, nickel-cadmium, lead, lithium batteries are made to reuse as the chemicals present in them can cause harm to the environment if allowed to stay long in open air after being discarded by the users. Moreover batteries are regarded as the most expensive energy source and their production requires much valuable recourse, so they are recycled so as to restore those valuable materials gd761,kd476 from those old and used batteries through battery recyling.

Cadmium is a heavy metal and can cause pollution if burned or cremated. To avoid lead pollution lead-aced batteries are processed. This program is considered to be highly successful. Lithium-ion can be very dangerous if exposed to high temperature or sunlight, it can ignite or explode. Therefore battery recycling is a must if we want to protect our environment.

The Recycling Process:

First of all, the batteries to be recycled are sorted according to chemistries such as nickel-cadmium,nickel-metal-hydride, lithium, alkaline etc. The combustible material, such as plastics and insulation, is then removed with a gas fired thermal oxidizer, which is the first step in the recycling process. Most recycling plants have scrubbers where the gases from the thermal oxidizer are neutralized to remove pollutants, producing clean, naked , dell inspiron e1505 battery , sony vgp-bps2c ,vgp-bps2a ,cells that contain precious metal content.

The metal in the inspiron e1505 batteries are then heated to liquefy, after they have been hacked into little pieces. Black slag left by burned out non-metallic substances are scraped off with a slag arm, and the different alloys that settle according to weight are skimmed off. Some plants pour the liquid metals directly into (65 pounds) or ‘hogs’ (2000 pounds) without separating on site, ThinkPad X60 battery, which are then shipped to metal recovery plants to produce nickel, chromium and iron re-melt alloy for the manufacturing of other metal products.

State and Federal Regulations in the United States:

The Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act was passed in 1996 by the U.S. Congress which requires regulated batteries such as Ni-CD batteries and sealed lead-acid batteries to:

  • 1. be easily removable from consumer products to make it easier to recover them for recycling
  • 2. include in the label the battery chemistry, the “three chasing arrows” symbol, dell KD476 and a phrase that instructs users to properly recycle or dispose the battery
  • 3. provide national uniformity in collection, storage, and transport
  • 4. phase out the use of certain mercury-containing batteries
  • By recycling batteries the environment is not being polluted nearly as much, many natural resources are saved due to the rechargeable laitude d830 battery also. There is a large variety of websites on the Internet with more quality information on recycling batteries.

    Latitude D620 Battery Life experience

My friends and I have all experienced poor battery life on Dell Latitude D620’s that are typically less than six months old. There may or may not be a high failure rate for this battery model, and this page details my experiences in diagnosing the health of my latitude d620 battery and obtaining a replacement under warranty.

    Determining Battery Health

There are several methods of determining your battery’s capacity relative to it’s initial specification (aka “health”).

Press and hold the status button located on the bottom of your latitude d620 battery. The five LED lights will initially display your battery’s current charge (five lights is charged, zero lights is discharged), and if you continue pressing the status button for three seconds the lights will blink off and back on again, now displaying the health of your battery. If zero lights appear your battery is operating at greater than 80% of its specified capacity, if five lights appear your battery is operating at less than 60% of its specified capacity. This information was pulled from the D620 User Guide.
If you enter the system BIOS by pressing “F2″ during the Dell logo while booting, there is a “Battery Health” option under the “Sytem” menu which gives a qualitative assessment of battery health.

The power manager under FC6 tracks the maximum capacity of your battery at its last full charge and generates a health percentage based on the factory spec charge for your battery. To view this information, right-click the battery meter in your gnome panel, select “Information”, and expand the “More” area of the “Device Information” panel.

If you kept your initial Windows XP install, there is a battery health meter under the Dell Quickset applet in the lower right hand corner of the screen that gives the same information that is available through the system BIOS.

    Obtaining a Replacement Battery

Of course, you always have the option of purchasing a replacement battery from Dell (9-cell or 6-cell),new latitude d630 battery, latitude d830 battery. These are newer replacement battery, or simply living with degraded battery life. There are some circumstances where you may be able to obtain a replacement under warranty, though. If the BIOS/Quickset health gauges are showing the battery as failed even though it’s less than a year old, Dell will replace it under warranty. According to the phone rep that I spoke to, a battery is considered to have failed when operating at less than 50% of its rated capacity. When I called, my battery was five months old and operating at 50%-60% of it’s capacity (5 death lights, BIOS noted lowered battery life but did not pronounce failure, FC6 power manager rated health at 56%, observed laptop battery life was 50%-60% of expected). I was able to successfully make the case that the battery was clearly borderline and would certainly be replaced within a month or two, and that doing so now was an opportunity to provide excellent customer service whereas forcing me to wait would serve no purpose other than irritating me. To his credit, the phone rep immediately acknowledged that my line of thinking was reasonable, spoke to a supervisor, and was able to authorize the early replacement.

    Conclusion

I love my laptop, and in general I’m very happy with it. It does look like there’s a trend toward premature dell laptop battery failure, though, and if your situation is severe enough you may be eligible for a warranty replacement. Once your replacement arrives, go read about how to monitor and optimize battery performance.

New Sony rechargeable battery charges faster and lasts longer

We cover our fair share of battery technology breakthroughs here at Gizmag, from lithium-sulfur batteries to NanoEnergy batteries. But it’s less often that we get to report on new and improved sony batteries actually hitting the market. So it was nice to learn that Sony has launched a new type of rechargeable Li-ion battery that promises an extended life span more than four times that of existing Li-ion batteries and can be charged to 99 percent of its full capacity in 30 minutes – approximately half the charge time of Sony’s current Li-ion battery line up. Sony have a series good products: sony vgp-bps2c ,vgp-bps2a ,vgp-bpl2c, vgp-bps2

The new batteries use Olivine-type lithium phosphate as a cathode, which Sony says is well suited for the purpose due to its robust crystal structure and stable performance, even at high temperatures. Sony combined this new cathode material with its particle design technology to minimize electrical resistance and deliver a high power density of 1800W/kg and extended sony laptop battery life span with the batteries boasting a 80 percent capacity retention after 2,000 charge-discharge cycles.

Since the new batteries are able to charge rapidly and provide a stable discharge of voltage,vgp-bps2c battery, Sony has decided to initially supply the batteries for use in motor-driven devices such as power tools, but says it will expand their application to a wide range of other mobile electric devices in the future.

Sony began shipping the new vgp-bps2c batteries in July, so expect some power tools packing the new sony battery technology to start appearing soon.

That’s the link to Sony’s description and official press release about the batteries, and here’s the punchline:

  • 1. Power density: 1800W/kg (20A continuous discharge)
  • 2. Long-life: more than 80% capacity retention after 2,000 charge-discharge cycles
  • 3. Rapid charging: 99% charge completed in 30 minutes

Sony says battery burn-out probe should have been quicker

Sony has admitted it could have moved “more quickly” to tackle the burning battery bug that hit two of the company’s biggest power-pack customers, Dell and Apple, and prompted many others to recall Sony-made lithium-ion batteries– sony vgp-bps2c , vgp-bps2b ,vgp-bpl2c , vgp-bps2a .

In an interview with Japanese-language newspaper the Mainchi Shimbun, relayed by Agence France-Presse, Sony President Ryoji Chubachi is quoted as saying: “The company should have investigated the cause of the battery problem more quickly.”

Chubachi also hinted that the sony battery issue may have arisen from Sony’s rush to deliver higher-capacity notebook power packs. “We had troubles as we tried to meet the demands for larger battery capacity,” he confessed, the paper said.

In October, Sony set aside ¥51.2bn ($444m/£224m/€334m) to cover a worldwide recall of almost 10m lithium-ion laptop batteries . Following a spate of exploding laptop incidents, Dell announced its own battery recall this summer, and was quickly followed by Apple and Lenovo.

They pointed the finger at Sony-made batteries as the cause of the combustion, and in September Sony’s battery division said it would support these and other laptop vendors who chose to instigate recalls.Sony vgp-bps2c, Gateway, Fujitsu, Sharp, Hitachi, Toshiba and Sony’s own Vaio division subsequently asked some of their customers to return Sony-made batteries.

Acer laptop claims 8-hour battery life

We’ve yet to see a Windows laptop with laptop battery life longer than 5-7 hours, unless we add an extended battery to the system. But when Acer launched its new series of laptops this week, one big push was for longer battery life.

[UPDATE: As one of our readers pointed out, we previously had in our Ratings a 13-inch Sony VAIO laptop with a tested sony vgp-bps2c battery life of over 6 hours. Our current Ratings of laptop computers (available to subscribers) also details several recently-tested Windows notebooks that also run for more than 5 hours, but those used an extended battery. —Ed.]

With its Aspire Timeline, Acer is claiming 8 hours of acer aspire 3000 battery life. That’s the same time Apple claims for its MacBook Pro 17-inch laptop, a figure we recently put to the test.

Behind the Aspire’s longer life, says Acer, is the combination of Intel Core 2 Duo ultra-low voltage processors and Intel Display Power Savings Technology (Intel DPST), which Intel says “reduces the display backlight with minimum visual impact.”

Acer had the longest battery life in our recent netbook Ratings, such as aspire 3000 battery , aspire 1680 battery , aspire 1410 battery .(available to subscribers) with its 10-inch Aspire One lasting 9 hours in our tests. We’ll see if its new 11.6-inch Aspire One netbook, also launched this week, lives up to its predecessor’s battery life as soon as we get our hands on one.

Where there’s power, of course, there can also be heat, especially now that batteries are cramming more power into less space. The Timeline laptops will use another Intel technology to reduce heat by redirecting airflow to the bottom side of the chassis and the wrist rest areas.

While we of course can’t yet say how well that cooling technology might work, when it comes to heat, Acer laptops have run cooler than the competition in our tests in recent years. (Our laptop testing actually includes a “lap test” that measures the temperature of the bottom of the laptop after it’s been stressed; see minute 3:10 our Laptop Buying Guide video. The hottest laptops, thermally speaking, have been models from HP and Apple.) — Chris Lam

Dell Inspiron B130 and B120 Review (pics, specs)

    Introduction

The Dell Inspiron B130 is a 15.4″ widescreen notebook, depending on how you configure it the B130 can be considered a budget offering or a mainstream type notebook with decent performance. The Inspiron B120 offered by Dell is precisely the same as the B130 except with a 14-inch widescreen. And inspiron b120 battery have the same code as inspiron b130 battery. The B120 build and dimensions match that of the B130, only the B120 has a thicker plastic area around the screen to replace the display real estate. The following is a review of the Inspiron B130 but the evaluation can be carried over and applied to the B120 as well.

Specs for Inspiron B130 as reviewed:

  • Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73GHz/2MB Cache/400MHz FSB*)
  • 15.4-inch WXGA display
  • 512MB of RAM (2 stick configuration)
  • Intel integrated Media Accelerator 900 graphics card
  • 60GB Hard Drive (5400RPM)
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home
  • 24x CD Burner/DVD Combo drive
  • Dell 1470 Internal Wireless 802.11a/b/g
  • 56Kbps Modem and Integrated Network Card (ethernet)
  • Dimensions: Height 1.41″, Width 14.0″, Depth 10.5″
  • Weight: 6.7lbs (with 4-cell battery)
  • 4-cell Lithium Ion Battery(kd186 , hd438 )

  • 1 yr. warranty
  • Final Price (after using $250 off Dell coupon): $1,027 – $250 Off Dell Coupon Code + $49.00 Shipping + $69.17 Tax = $895.17
  • the Pentium M 740 actually has a 533MHz FSB but operates at 400MHz in the B130
  • Design and Build

This is a budget notebook and as such is constructed in a manner to keep costs down. The body casing is entirely plastic, no fancy aluminum or magnesium protection. The plastic used is not flimsy though, it’s actually really quite sturdy. I used the Dell Inspiron 1000 a while back and was highly disappointed with the flimsiness of the casing, the B130 is certainly a step up from that, but it have a powerful dell inspiron b130 battery . There’s no major flexing issues of the body and the keyboard is firm.

The hinges are firm, there’s no wobble of the screen even if you move the notebook around. This is impressive, often with budget notebooks the hinges can be somewhat weak. The protection provided by the lid is also good, if you push in on the lid area it’s hard to get ripples to appear on the screen. However, the plastic area around the screen is not held on very well and on the B120 (14-inch screen version of the B130) it is very thick and ugly looking. I can pull the plastic covering away from the LCD with ease.

The look of the Inspiron B130 is a mix of silver and black. The lid is an entirely silver-grey color while the rest of the body is black with an accent of silver trim around the keyboard. The look is not bad in this author’s opinion, and actually better than the some off the exisiting Dell Inspirons available with the silver and white finish. It’s certainly not sleek or pretty by any stretch, it looks like the plastic it is built from, the front speakers are ugly holes in plastic that look more like vents, and the largish green LED light indicators on the front are reminiscent of a 1980’s mainframe computer. So no design awards but due to the well selected and professional black-silver coloring it’s not ugly either.

    Screen

The Inspiron B130 is a widescreen notebook that uses a WXGA resolution (1280 x 800). The screen is a matte finish and there is no option for the popular glossy high-contrast display finish that Dell calls “TrueLife”. The screen brightness is middling, it’s certainly not as bright and glorious as the Dell Inspiron 700m or the Dell XPS M140 I’ve reviewed in the past.Inspiron 700m battery , When on AC power the screen is bright enouggh, but when you switch to battery it becomes too dim — you can adjust your display and power settings to force the screen to be brighter when on battery but at the cost of shorter battery life. Overall, the text and images are sharp and the matte screen means you won’t get a bunch of reflection on the screen that can become distracting.

There’s some light leakage around the bottom area and lighting is not even across the screen, but this is only noticeable on dark backgrounds such as the default Windows XP screensaver in which the screen is all black and the Windows logo can be seen floating across it. Also, it seems that some colors are not true — reds tend to appear a bit orange like so it’s probably not the best display for those really into photo editing.

    Processor and Performance

You can opt to have your Inspiron B130/B120 configured with either a Pentium M or Celeron M processor. You’ll save money with the Celeron M configuration and to be honest, I think that’s the best route to go with this notebook. It’s a budget machine and when you have the Intel 910GML chipset and motherboard (as the dell B130 battery / B120 battery does) you’re going to be limited to a bus speed of 400MHz between the processor and memory. Even though my system indicated a 533MHz FSB on the Pentium M 740 processor I configured and the memory I have can theoretically run at 533MHz, it does not, it runs at 400MHz. So esentially Dell put together a machine in which the chipset is the weakest link, and since components work together as a team, the system can only be as fast as that weakest link is willing to work (400MHz).

Windows 7 Improves Laptop Battery Life by 11%

It is no secret that Windows Vista has a whole lot of hate aimed at it by its (often unwilling) users. Even “I’m a Mac” commercials put it as the punchline. Windows 7 is Microsoft’s answer to the demand for a better operating system, and there is an improvement that makes it way cooler than just a functional version of Vista.

According to Engadget, Micrsoft showed off the battery-saving capabilities of Windows 7, which proved a bare minimum of 11% better laptop battery life thanks to the software, helping users green up their laptop by using that much less electricity for charging.

Read on for how this is, and for a video.

The pre-Beta version of Windows 7 offers better battery life in a few ways. First, fewer services launched at start-up. Also, loading device drivers is done in parallel instead of one at a time. Wireless radios are managed better so they can drop below 100% power draw, and the CPU can sometimes run at a lower frequency and stay idle longer.

All of this results in a minimum of 11% battery life improvement, but can be as much as 15% better. The software is still in pre-Beta, so a lot of improvements can still happen to make computers more efficient just with the OS.

Pretty exciting news for PC users who not only want a better OS, but also a more energy-efficient laptop. While we wait for the new software, you can check out a Windows Vista tweak that gets it to run more efficiently, along with other PC performance enhancing actions.
